To mark the 75th anniversary of Germany’s membership of UNESCO and the German National Commission for UNESCO, a special ceremony was held at the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin. The Bamberg World Heritage Centre was also represented at the event.

The President of the German National Commission for UNESCO, Maria Böhmer, and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany emphasised the importance of the UNESCO ideal for peace and international understanding. The focus was on UNESCO’s core mission of contributing to human well-being through its programmes.

Federal Minister of Education Karin Prien and the State Secretary at the Federal Foreign Office, Géza Andreas von Geyr, also reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to the United Nations. In particular, they emphasised the importance of education and culture for peace and international cooperation.

The ceremony thus not only provided an opportunity to look back on 75 years of German membership of UNESCO, but also offered impetus for future work in the field of World Heritage – and, consequently, for the work of the Bamberg World Heritage Centre.
