    World Heritage Obliges

    World Heritage Bamberg is a
    jewel with many facets

As a World Heritage city, Bamberg is on par with the Historic Centre of Florence, the Great Wall of China, Machu Piccu, and other important sites around the world. This status comes with the responsibility to preserve the site’s outstanding universal value. To succeed, we require not only in-depth knowledge, but also appreciation and commitment.

    Impressive

Bamberg was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1993. World Heritage is a vibrant strand of the life of Bamberg, benefiting the town and its residents.

    Bamberg World Heritage
    Office

Bamberg is a complex site, encompassing an entire living city of 76,000 people where modern life co-exists alongside historic cultural assets of global significance. Achieving balance between conservation and community needs is the constant challenge which the Bamberg World Heritage Office addresses. It coordinates the local implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and serves as a contact for all World Heritage issues.

    Current Projects

    World Heritage Anniversary

In 2018, Bamberg marks the 25th anniversary of its UNESCO World Heritage status with a rich programme that aims to convey the spirit of World Heritage to locals and guests alike.

    Visitor Centre

The new World Heritage Visitor Centre is designed to convey the characteristics and quality of the World Heritage “Town of Bamberg”, and to embed the site in the international context of UNESCO.

    Management Plan

UNESCO, the body overseeing World Heritage, requires all sites to have a management plan. This management plan should combine general strategies for the protection, use, maintenance, and sustainable development of the site as well as policies with specific goals that relate to the significance and setting of the site.

    Urban Gardening

The Urban Gardening project is based on Bamberg’s gardening tradition and combines aspects of urban planning, monument protection, tourism, and commercial farming.

    World Heritage Education

Cultural heritage is an excellent educational resource with many cross-curricular opportunities. This site provides information, guidance and resources to better understand our city’s heritage.

    National Networks

The World Heritage Convention is primarily an instrument of international understanding and cooperation. Accordingly, Bamberg is involved in numerous national networks.
