    World Heritage and Craftsmanship

Traditional craftsmanship is an essential part of World Heritage and is inextricably linked to its preservation. Many historic buildings in Bamberg have been preserved over the centuries only thanks to exceptional craftsmanship and traditional techniques. This knowledge is invaluable—it preserves the authenticity and unique character of Bamberg’s World Heritage site.

However, skilled workers who master historical craft techniques are becoming increasingly rare. Many young people are choosing different career paths, putting this valuable knowledge at risk of disappearing. In addition, craftsmanship has become less visible in everyday life—industrialization and modern technologies are increasingly displacing traditional activities. Yet craftsmanship means far more than manual skill: it stands for teamwork, perseverance, creativity, a sense of responsibility, and self-fulfillment.

With the “World Heritage and Craftsmanship” project, the Bamberg World Heritage Center aims to counteract this trend. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of craftsmanship in the context of World Heritage, to promote appreciation for craftsmanship, and to provide impetus for the revival of traditional techniques. At the same time, the project invites young people to get involved themselves and discover the fascination of craftsmanship.

In collaboration with the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the Chamber of Crafts for Upper Franconia, and the Bamberg World Heritage Foundation, the project will offer a series of workshops, a special exhibition, and a concluding panel discussion from October through December 2025.

The workshops on gilding, stonemasonry, horticulture, and baking are aimed at school students and combine engaging lectures by experts with hands-on exercises. Participants will have the opportunity to try out historical techniques for themselves and learn from experienced craftspeople.

Accompanying the workshops, the Bamberg World Heritage Center will present a special exhibition highlighting the history, significance, and future of craftsmanship. It introduces the world of historical guilds, explains the path from apprentice to master, and showcases the traditional role that craft trades have played in Bamberg. At the same time, the exhibition looks to the future: How are new technologies changing the craft sector? How can tradition and innovation be combined to keep craftsmanship alive?

For all participants, the project offers the opportunity to experience why craftsmanship is far more than just a profession—namely, a living cultural heritage that must be preserved and passed on.

On October 16, 2025, we kicked off the project with an introductory workshop on gilding, led by an enthusiastic class from the E.T.A. Hoffmann Gymnasium. The participants approached the task with great interest, patience, and skill.

A heartfelt thank you to Ms. Pfefferle, Deputy Master of the Bavarian Guild of Gilders and Barrel Painters, for this inspiring workshop!
