Meeting of Bavarian UNESCO World Heritage Sites

On November 17, 2025, the Bamberg World Heritage Center participated in the final meeting of the Bavarian World Heritage Sites Working Group for this year, which took place at the Augsburg World Heritage Information Center.

Following introductions by Ms. Biburger from the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (StMWK) and a discussion on the Regional Action Plan for World Heritage in Europe and North America (2024–2031), current projects, experiences from the past months, and new plans for the coming year were presented by all Bavarian World Heritage Sites.

In addition, a new member of the Bavarian World Heritage family was welcomed to the working group: “The Castles of King Ludwig II of Bavaria: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen, and Herrenchiemsee.” With this addition, Bavaria has had a total of twelve World Heritage sites since July 2025.

The latest developments regarding the opening of UNESCO World Heritage Day 2026 in Regensburg were also discussed.

A joint tour of Augsburg’s city center and a visit to the water towers at the Rotes Tor rounded out the meeting and offered fascinating insights into “The Augsburg Water System.”

Last week, the city of Bamberg was presented as a best practice for the management of UNESCO World Heritage sites during the international course “World Heritage Management for Sustainable Development” in Urbino, Italy.
