Three Years of PopUpUrbanSpaces – A Vibrant Chapter for the World Heritage Site

The EU-funded Interreg Central Europe project PopUpUrbanSpaces has come to a close – and we look back on three intense, inspiring, and educational years. Three years filled with exciting locations, lively discussions, and above all: many people eager to rethink their city.

In Bamberg, we worked together to explore how public spaces can be temporarily repurposed—in an accessible, creative, and participatory way. From developing a thorough baseline analysis to searching for suitable locations and finally implementing the PopUp in Theuerstadt, the project was a continuous learning process.

Through workshops, participatory formats, and concrete on-site measures, a parking lot was transformed into a lively meeting place. People danced, discussed, ate, made music, and played. Neighborhoods engaged in conversation, new perspectives on familiar places emerged, and historic urban spaces could be experienced in new ways.

PopUpUrbanSpaces has shown that even in the sensitive context of a World Heritage city, temporary changes are possible—and can be enriching. We have seen how valuable early engagement is, how important motivation and collaboration are, and how much potential lies in small, bold steps.

What remains is more than just a temporarily redesigned square. What remains is the spirit of trying new things. What remains is the courage to view government as a learning system. And what remains is a strengthened network of engaged citizens, initiatives, and colleagues within the city administration.

We thank all participants, partner cities, and supporters who made this project possible. Together, we have shown: The World Heritage Site is alive—through the people who shape it.
