    World Heritage Festival in Bamberg

On September 21, 2024, the World Heritage Festival transformed the Böhmerwiese in Bamberg into a place of encounter and intercultural exchange. Under the theme “Mexico,” the festival offered some 1,500 visitors a unique opportunity to experience Mexico’s diversity and cultural heritage in Bamberg. With a wide variety of exhibitions, music, dance, traditional handicrafts, and cuisine, the World Heritage Festival became an unforgettable experience that further strengthened the bridge between Bamberg and the global world of UNESCO World Heritage. It demonstrated once again how the World Heritage Center celebrates cultural diversity and promotes dialogue between different cultures through creative and interactive events.

The event was opened by Her Excellency Ambassador Cecilia Villanueva Bracho and Bamberg’s Mayor, Mr. Andreas Starke. A particular highlight was the World Heritage exhibition, which showcased Mexico’s 35 UNESCO World Heritage sites—including Chichén Itzá and the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve—as well as Bamberg’s unique historic urban layout. This was complemented by insights into intangible cultural heritage such as mariachi music and Bamberg’s gardening tradition. The musical program featured performances by renowned artists such as the band Mexican Institute of Sound, the Mariachi Dos Aguilas, and the dance group Mexico Magico. An enchanting children’s program allowed younger guests to learn more about Mexico’s cultural and natural heritage in a playful way. Craft stalls showcased authentic Mexican textiles, while the culinary offerings—including tacos, tamales, tequila, and Bamberg beer—provided a special taste experience.

The festival created a unique platform for intercultural exchange, combining knowledge sharing with sensory experiences and sparking enthusiasm for the diversity of the World Heritage Site.
