How did electricity find its way into a Bamberg gardener’s household? This is the question explored by the new cabinet exhibition “And There Was Light! Electricity from Around 1900 by Thomas Kauer” at the Bamberg Gardeners’ and Winegrowers’ Museum.

Using original preserved lamps, switches, wiring, and fuse boxes, the exhibition conveys an impression of the early days of domestic electricity. The exhibits show how electrification around 1900 increasingly became part of everyday life and what technical changes this entailed for residents.

In doing so, the exhibition sheds light on a chapter of everyday and technological history in the historic Gärtner quarter and demonstrates how social and technical change also left its mark on today’s World Heritage Site of Bamberg.

The special exhibition will be on view at the Gärtner- und Häckermuseum from July 24 through November 8, 2026.
