Good news for gardening enthusiasts: The Gardener and Winegrower Museum kicks off its new season on April 21. “We are delighted to be able to present our guests with a diverse program in the year Bamberg celebrates its 30th anniversary on the World Heritage List,” says Andreas Dechant, chairman of the museum association. The museum will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. until November 5, 2023.
The historic gardener’s house, which houses the museum, offers a glimpse into how gardener families lived around 1900. It offers a glimpse into the private and religious lives of the gardeners and showcases typical local Bamberg varieties, traditional tools, and the gardeners’ trade routes. Multimedia stations, display panels, and the “Gärtnerkino” (Gardener’s Cinema) in the former stable provide further unique insights into the diverse world of gardening. However, anyone interested in visiting the show garden will have to be patient for a little while longer due to weather conditions. The local varieties are currently being planted and, naturally, still need some time to reach a certain size.
“The Bamberg Gardeners’ and Winegrowers’ Museum is unique. Its illustration of gardening culture is a great asset to Bamberg’s World Heritage outreach,” enthuses Diana Büttner, acting director of the Bamberg World Heritage Center, pointing to the anniversary program marking Bamberg’s 30th year on the World Heritage List, in which the “Garden City” takes center stage.
Right at the start of the season, the Open Market Gardens Day on April 30 marks a highlight of the annual program: twice daily, public tours and guided tours led by experts will be offered through the museum garden. The museum will also participate in International Museum Day on May 15 with special tours. Participation in these events requires only the payment of the museum admission fee. Young gardening enthusiasts can also explore the Gardener and Hecker Museum this year at the Children’s University on May 6, which was created in cooperation with Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg and the Bamberg World Heritage Center. The museum’s full annual program can be found on the museum’s website at www.ghm-bamberg.de. Additional events and lectures related to the theme of the Gardener City can be found at: www.welterbe.bamberg.de/de/projekte/jubilaeum.
The museum is also offering group tours again. The one-and-a-half-hour tours of the house and garden can be booked with Stephanie Eißing at This email address is being protected from spambots. The tours always start on Fridays at 2:30 p.m. and can be booked by calling the information hotline at 0951/2976-200 or directly at the Tourist Information office at Geyerswörthstraße 5.
