World Heritage Lives On – By People, With People, For People
On June 1, 2025, Bamberg will join the 54 World Heritage sites in Germany in celebrating UNESCO World Heritage Day—a special occasion to mark the 20th anniversary of this unique event. Under the motto “Educate, Connect, Inspire,” the Bamberg World Heritage Center invites you to a series of hands-on activities and events from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This year, the focus is on the active participation of citizens in shaping the open spaces within the World Heritage site.
As part of the EU INTERREG project “PopUpUrbanSpaces,” the Bamberg World Heritage Center will implement various initiatives that create more meeting places for citizens and offer them the opportunity to actively contribute to the design of their surroundings.
1. Location: Theuerstadt. What: PopUpUrbanSpaces. When: starting at 2:00 p.m.
Supported by Urban Lab from Nuremberg, the EU project “PopUpUrbanSpaces” will be presented in Theuerstadt. This is a creative initiative for the temporary redesign of public spaces, opening up room for new encounters and uses. The project invites people to reflect on the temporary use of open spaces and to develop concrete ideas for improving the urban environment.
2. Location: Jakobsplatz. What: Community associations shape the future. When: starting at 2:00 p.m.
Together with the community associations of the mountain town, an event will be held at Jakobsplatz to explore better ways to use open spaces in line with residents’ needs. The goal is to develop new ideas for revitalizing Jakobsplatz and to create space for neighborhood interactions.
3. Location: World Heritage Visitor Center and Lower Mill Bridge. What: World Heritage guided tour, children’s program, “Have you talked to a stranger today?” event. When: starting at 2:00 p.m.
The Bamberg World Heritage Center invites you to a special event at the Lower Mill Bridge to highlight the social aspects of the World Heritage site. A special guided tour at the World Heritage Visitor Center provides information about UNESCO and the World Heritage Program. A child-friendly program rounds out the offerings and helps bring the World Heritage Site closer to younger generations.
On this day, the popular “Bamberg on Tour” bike tour along the World Heritage boundaries will also take place—an ideal opportunity to discover the scope of the World Heritage Site in Bamberg on two wheels.
In conjunction with this, the Bamberg Tourism & Congress Service invites you to themed guided tours of the World Heritage Site, including the tour “Experience Bamberg’s World Heritage.” For information and reservations, visit: www.bamberg.info/veranstaltungen
The Bamberg World Heritage Center looks forward to presenting a living World Heritage Site—by people, with people, for people!
