30 Years as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

What do we actually know about the acoustic characteristics of World Heritage sites? How can World Heritage and renewable energy create synergy? And what is the story behind the preserved heritage in the Lower Gärtnerstadt? Answers to these questions and much more interesting information can be found in the second-half-year program, which the Bamberg World Heritage Center has developed together with numerous other partners to mark the 30th anniversary of the inclusion of the “Old Town of Bamberg” on the World Heritage List.

With over 30 events, lectures, special exhibitions, guided tours, and hands-on activities, the program continues to highlight Bamberg’s World Heritage Site in all its facets during the second half of the year: “Whether it’s the Heritage Slam, the wine festival in the St. Michael vineyard, or special guided tours offering unique insights into otherwise closed-off historic buildings—our second-half-year program reveals many perspectives on the World Heritage Site in Bamberg,” says Diana Büttner, acting director of the Bamberg World Heritage Center.

Meanwhile, there is a thematic focus for the months between July and December: “After we kicked off the anniversary in spectacular fashion with a ‘White Dinner’ in the Gärtnerstadt, the focus in the second half of the year will also be on Bamberg’s green heritage and aspects of sustainability.”

In addition to the special exhibition "Saved Heritage: Bamberg´s Lower Garderners City" at the Gardeners- and Wine-making Museum, guided tours of the herbal market garden "Mussärol" will be offered, and the gardeners´newly resotred St. Sebastian Chapel will be open for individual tours and visits.

    Foundation Festival on July 23

A highlight will be the foundation celebration marking the 20th anniversary of the Bamberg World Heritage Foundation, to be held at the St. Michael Monastery complex on Sunday, July 23. Weather permitting, guests will have the opportunity to tour the towers of the former monastery. Another highlight offering unique insights into the Lower Mill District is the guided tour “Hydropower and World Heritage,” organized by the World Heritage Center in cooperation with the Adult Education Center on Saturday, October 28. Special lectures promise new perspectives on the World Heritage Site: “In Search of the Sounds of the World Heritage Site: A Methodological Study to Determine the Acoustic Value of World Heritage Sites” at the Adult Education Center, and the continuation of the lecture series on Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Junior Professorship for European Ethnology, with a focus on intangible cultural heritage.

    Museum Workshop for Youth

The museums of the City of Bamberg have something to offer young people interested in World Heritage: On Saturday, September 23, the Historical Museum will host the guided tour “Bamberg and Art” along with a museum workshop for youth.
