On Open Monument Day, the Bamberg World Heritage Center will also open its doors and invite visitors to explore Bamberg’s World Heritage sites from different perspectives. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., visitors can enjoy a varied program focusing on World Heritage, sustainability, and the city’s historic mill districts.
World Heritage and Sustainability
The focus is on the special exhibition “World Heritage and Sustainability.” World Heritage sites not only preserve evidence of the past but can also provide inspiration for the future. Using various World Heritage sites as examples, the exhibition illustrates the approaches being developed to address the challenges of climate change and how cultural heritage can be integrated with sustainable urban development.
Get Involved and Discover New Perspectives
To complement the exhibition, students from the University of Bamberg invite visitors to actively engage with the topics of World Heritage and sustainability at various interactive stations. Visitors can get hands-on, explore questions, and gain new perspectives on how to approach cultural heritage.
Bamberg’s Mills in Context
Another program highlight is dedicated to Bamberg’s historic mill districts. Four short guided tours will illustrate how closely the mills were once connected to one another via the waterways and the significance they held for the urban fabric. The tours will also explore the connections between the historic mills and Bamberg’s World Heritage Site.
The short guided tours begin at 1:00 p.m., 1:45 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. The meeting point for each tour is the foyer of the Bamberg World Heritage Center.
Activities for Children and the Heritage Passport
There’s also something for younger visitors to discover. At the children’s art station, they can get creative and interpret the World Heritage Site in their own way.
In addition, the Bamberg World Heritage Center is one of six stamp stations operated by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. With their personal Monument Passport, visitors can collect stamps and explore various monuments and event venues. Those who complete their passport also have the chance to enter a raffle hosted by the German Foundation for Monument Protection.
The Bamberg World Heritage Center looks forward to welcoming many visitors and to a day full of diverse activities centered on the city’s historical heritage.
