“World Heritage Day is actually not just a day for coming together, but also for innovation,” said Diana Büttner, acting director of the World Heritage Center, “but given the enthusiasm and the many requests from our guests last year, we decided to make an exception and repeat the White Dinner.” And it was a resounding success—a total of 250 guests gathered on May 27 at the Böhmerwiese to picnic together, chat, listen to music, and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Mayor Andreas Starke and Bavarian Minister of State for European Affairs Melanie Huml welcomed the guests, all dressed in white. The wind quintet of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Jazz Colors Bamberg provided top-notch musical entertainment and encouraged dancing.

“World Heritage Day was established by the German UNESCO Commission to create a connection—between people and their World Heritage sites—but also between people in the spirit of international understanding,” said Diana Büttner, “which is why I am particularly pleased that we were able to welcome an international group of master’s students from TU Berlin this year.” Prior to this, the group had spent four days exploring the Gärtnerstadt and interviewing gardeners and stakeholders. The group presented their interdisciplinary approaches for the further development of the Gärtnerstadt to interested guests on the Böhmerwiese.

Across Germany, UNESCO World Heritage Day was celebrated on June 4 under the motto “Our World. Our Heritage. Our Responsibility” at 46 World Heritage sites, all under sunny skies. With more than 400 special tours, concerts, exhibitions, and hands-on activities, it was, according to the German UNESCO Commission, more successful than ever before.

The White Dinner is part of a series of events celebrating Bamberg’s 30th anniversary on the World Heritage List. In this anniversary year, the Bamberg World Heritage Center has put together a diverse program in collaboration with local and national partners.
