    Open Garden Day 2026

Bamberg in Bloom! – Spring, Gardens, Gardening Culture

Program. As spring bathes Bamberg’s market gardens in fresh greenery and vibrant colors, one of southern Germany’s most popular gardening events invites visitors to explore once again: Open Market Gardens Day in Bamberg.

On Sunday, April 26, twelve traditional market gardens in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bamberg and throughout the city will open their doors and warmly welcome visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This special event offers a rare opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of Bamberg’s gardening culture, which has shaped the cityscape for centuries and remains vibrant to this day. While strolling through the historic nurseries—with impressive views of Bamberg Cathedral and the churches of the Old Town—guests will experience a colorful sea of spring blossoms and find inspiration for contemporary, sustainable gardening. Whether for a balcony, terrace, or garden: gardening enthusiasts will discover an extraordinary variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and ornamental plants. The Bamberg gardeners place special emphasis on traditional horticultural quality and regional variety.

A varied supporting program for the whole family makes the day an experience for all age groups:

    • Firsthand expertise: Master gardeners are on hand for personal consultations and offer practical tips on topics such as natural fertilization, soil improvement, plant health, and sustainable garden care. They’re also happy to give you a behind-the-scenes look at their market gardens.
    • A paradise for plant lovers: More than 100 seed-true tomato varieties, an equally large selection of various vegetable seedlings, numerous aromatic medicinal and culinary herbs, and a wide range of flowering plants invite you to explore, compare, and take them home.
    • Fun and information for children: Through activities like plant quizzes, treasure hunts, or planting their own little salad pots, gardening knowledge is taught in a playful way and a love of nature is sparked. There’s a bouncy castle for the kids to run around in.
    • Culinary diversity from the Garden City: From vegetarian delicacies made with “Bamberg vegetables” to smoked pulled pork with sliced potatoes and house-brewed beers from the hop garden—regional specialties ensure delightful breaks.

The Open Market Gardens Day combines tradition, sustainability, and joie de vivre, impressively demonstrating why Bamberg is rightly known as the “Garden City.”

Admission and participation in all activities are free of charge.
