OWHC Day: Vibrant World Heritage Cities

On September 8, the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) celebrates its founding anniversary. The international network was founded in 1993 in Fès, Morocco, and today connects more than 300 cities across five continents. Bamberg is also a member of the OWHC.

The network centers on exchange between the cities. Through thematic working groups and joint projects, members share knowledge and experiences and collaboratively develop approaches to addressing the unique challenges faced by historic cities.

This year’s theme focuses on how historic cities can remain livable and habitable. This is also a key priority for Bamberg. The World Heritage site should not only be preserved but also maintained and sustainably developed as a vibrant place to live, work, and thrive.

On OWHC Day, the World Heritage flags fly at the Old Town Hall and the Town Hall on Maximiliansplatz. They symbolize the international solidarity among the member cities and serve as a reminder that preserving the World Heritage site is a shared responsibility.
