Exploring the Boundaries of the World Heritage Site

Residents of Bamberg know that parts of the Gärtnerstadt, Inselstadt, and Bergstadt districts are part of the World Heritage Site. They may also know that the total area of the UNESCO-protected zone covers 142 hectares. However, many are unaware of exactly where the World Heritage boundary lies. This is where “Bamberg on tour” comes in on Sunday, April 21. The goal is to cycle along the World Heritage boundary together with city officials. The meeting point is at 2 p.m. on Maxplatz. No registration is required.

“Bamberg on tour” is a bike tour for residents focusing on topics relevant to the city. In addition to city officials, knowledgeable staff members from the city administration will also accompany the tour.

“The journey is the destination”—that could well be the motto for “Bamberg on Tour” on April 21. Covering 142 hectares within the usual time frame of 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. is quite a challenge. Participants will cover about twelve kilometers of partly hilly terrain; therefore, we ask that you only participate if you are in good physical condition and have a bike suitable for touring. The route starts at Maxplatz, crosses the Kettenbrücke, and heads into Gärtnerstadt. Stops will be made on Plattengasse and at Ottokirche. Returning across the Kettenbrücke, the first stop in Inselstadt is planned at the Konzerthalle. The climb into the Bergstadt begins at the Maienbrunnen. Stops on this leg will be at the Ottobrunnen, behind the Jakobskirche, and at the corner of Oberer Stephansberg and Alter Graben. The next destination is the Bamberg World Heritage Center, where, for example, you’ll learn why Bamberg became a World Heritage Site and what the team at the Bamberg World Heritage Center is doing to inspire everyone—locals and visitors alike—to appreciate Bamberg’s World Heritage status. Finally, the tour concludes with the last leg to the northern promenade. This is where “Bamberg on tour” ends.
