The visitor center of the Bamberg World Heritage Center was a stop on this year’s OWHC Young Traveling Scholarship itinerary. As part of the program, Mia and Alex are traveling through European World Heritage cities, exploring the theme “Lifestyles of Heritage.”

The focus of their journey is the question of what makes a World Heritage city a great place to live. In doing so, they are looking not only at historic buildings and distinctive cityscapes, but above all at the people who live, work, study, and go about their daily lives there.

At the Bamberg World Heritage Center, too, the discussion centered on World Heritage as a living urban space. Together, they discussed how the protection and preservation of historical heritage can be reconciled with the needs of a vibrant city and what role the various local stakeholders play in this process.

The visit provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and perspectives and to offer insight into how Bamberg manages its World Heritage Site. We are delighted that Bamberg had the honor of kicking off the journey and are eager to hear the impressions Mia and Alex will bring back from the other cities.
