Hands-on heritage preservation and a green treasure—Otto Friedrich University and the Bamberg World Heritage Center invite you to a day full of surprises and new discoveries. On Saturday, May 6, 2023, students aged 9 to 12 will have the opportunity to get to know their city better at the Children’s University. Bamberg has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for 30 years – to mark the anniversary, the Children’s University will focus entirely on the theme of World Heritage.
Why is Bamberg a World Heritage Site, and what does that mean?
How did gardeners live and work in the past?
Where is the lance of St. George, the patron saint of horsemen and farmers, actually located?
The young researchers will explore these questions, traveling back and forth to the Middle Ages. A scavenger hunt will feature stories and whimsical legends from the era of knights and queens. Guided tours of the World Heritage Visitor Center will be offered. Using microscopes and 3D scanning techniques, the university’s heritage conservationists will demonstrate how the World Heritage site is studied. The scientists will also lead participants to a green treasure. Participation in the Children’s University is free of charge. Individual events last approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Note: No parents allowed!
What is the Children’s University?
Since 2003, scientists have presented topics from their fields of research each year in lectures tailored specifically for children. The Children’s University is organized in collaboration with the Mediengruppe Oberfranken and its premium brand, Fränkischer Tag. To mark the “30 Years of UNESCO World Heritage” anniversary, the Children’s University will be held in the summer semester of 2023 in cooperation with the Bamberg World Heritage Center and sponsored by the Familie-Schweiger-Stiftung. The foundation supports charitable activities in the fields of child and youth welfare, as well as culture and historic preservation.
