The exhibition has been created with the support of the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Mexico.

It presents Mexico's rich cultural and natural heritage and includes many aspects:

- an overview of World Heritage in Mexico (Mexico has currently 35 properties inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: significant archaeological sites of the Mayan and Aztec cultures like Palenque, Teotihuacán, Chichén Itzá, or Calakmul; historic cities like Mexico City, Puebla, Morelia or Cosalá; cultural landscapes like the agave landscape and the ancient industrial facilities of Tequila; natural heritage sites like the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, or the Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaino).

- an introduction to Mexico's intangible heritage (Mexico has 11 practices inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of Humanity: for example, the Mariachi music, the artisanal talavera of Puebla and Tlaxcala, traditional Pirekua song, the traditional Mexican cuisine, or the indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead).

Mexican Institute of Sound is a celebration, a tribute to the sounds that have forged a whole country. Songs that sound fresh and catchy but have that aura of a Mexico that was already gone, of cities, colors, people, flavors, and dances that we did not live, but felt as ours. The magic of a project like this is that it connects with that nostalgic part we all have. 

Behind the project is deejay and producer Camilo Lara. With "Méjico Máxico" (Nacional, 2006), Piñata (Indie Europe/Zoom, 2009), "Soy Sauce" (El Volcán Música, 2009), "Político" (El Volcán Música, 2012), "Disco Popular" (El Volcán Música, 2017), "Distrito Federal" (El Volcán Música, 2021), an album that featured collaborations with La Perla, Graham Coxon, Cuco and Joe Crepúsculo, and in many other eps, Camilo Lara has demonstrated that sometimes it is possible to find the magic formula of the musical, cultural and symbolic fusion of mariachi soul, the spirit of the sonideros and the most audacious electronic and synthetic noises.

As an essential character of the Mexican culture movement Camilo Lara also displays a vindictive cry for social justice in his project, Mexican Institute of Sound. As he himself declares, "the only democratic place on earth right now is the dance floor. On a dance floor you can be rich, poor, ugly, handsome, black or white; but if the music is good, it unites the community".

 

It is not easy to summarize 20 years of career, but it is even more difficult to do it for a project like M.I.S. His work has earned him 1 Grammy and 4 Latin Grammy nominations, and he has produced artists ranging from Los Angeles Azules (achieving the best-selling Mexican album of the last 25 years, 8 times diamond disc), Lila Downs, Norah Jones and Band of Horses. He has remixed Beck, the Beastie Boys, Interpol, Metallica, Run the Jewels, among others.

 

He has also collaborated with a wide range of artists such as Cuco, Ludmilla, Bonde do Rolé, Sly & Robbie, Toots and the Maytails, Gogol Bordello, Tom Tom Club, J from Spanish rock group Los Planetas among others. Lara voices himself as the radio co-DJ of the East Los FM radio station with Don Cheto on the best-selling videogame of all times: Grand Theft Auto V where he is a featured radio and where we can also listen to his hit "Es-Toy". He was the music consultant for the Pixar movie "Coco" (where he had a cameo!) and where we can listen to "Jálale", his music has also appeared in Narcos, Breaking Bad, Y tu mamá también, Californication, Ugly Betty, to name a few. In recent years he has worked with Marvel Studios for the soundtracks of the films "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and "Thor: Love and Thunder". Numerous brands have used his compositions for campaigns in the United States including Apple, Target, H&M, Lexus and Best Buy. In 2023, he received the Daytime Creative Arts Emmy for "Music Direction and Composition" for his recent collaboration on the documentary series "Home: Innovative Homes". A life of songs turned into a life of hits.

 

The Spanish newspaper El País named him one of the "50 most influential people in Latin America". Quién Magazine named him one of the "50 people who are Transforming Mexico". Camilo Lara never rests. He currently hosts the radio show "Dilo Camilo" on Radio3, a journey through mesmerizing scenes, epic albums, and unique projects, that keeps him in an origin of constant search for musical denomination.

Thanks to the support of the Mexican Consulate in Frankfurt, visitors will be able to admire a unique collection of five codex-facsimiles.

 

Codices are cultural artifacts that were used my Mesoamerican peoples in order to record their knowledge and memories. In Nahuatl-languages, they were refered to as amoxtli, and some researchers consider them to be "the oldest books in the New World", or simply "handpainted books".

 

 

Tacumba Son Jarocho is a cultural project that aims to bring people closer to the traditional music of Mexico and its fascinating culture. The musical style "Son Jarocho" comes from the southern region of Veracruz, where Indigenous, African and Andalusian influences come together and make the unique rhythm of Son Jarocho.

Kawenzmann, already an institution on Bamberg's bar scene, will offer a wide selection of cocktails with Mexican ingredients. Tequila and Mezcal will most certainly be part of the menu!

 

The agave landscape and the ancient industrial facilities of Tequila were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006.
